Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) is back in season three of TNT's crime procedural The Closer. With a couple years at the Los Angeles police department already under her belt, Brenda has proven that her eccentric method works at getting confessions from even the most hardened criminals. But even she's not quite sure how to handle the season opener, where a slaughtered family's sole survivor is the stunned, stoned teenage son. Bleak, dark and wonderfully scripted, the opener sets the tone for the 14 episodes that follow it. With an exaggerated Southern drawl that belies her hard edged attitude, Brenda is at her best in the field. But when dropped into personal situations, she often flounders. For instance, though she commands a team of officers underneath her, she still doesn't know how to tell her parents she lives with her boyfriend, FBI special agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney, Fools Rush In). The awkward (and sometimes poignant) moments between Johnson and her folks humanize her, giving her added dimension. Sedgwick is adept at comedy, and a couple of the episodes take advantage of her skills. Jostling with an over zealous bridezilla at a crime scene, Johnson becomes the subject of a popular Youtube video. "You've become the most downloaded fully-clothed woman on the Internet," announces her boss, Will Pope (J.K. Simmons). There is some internal drama when Brenda is ordered to make budget cuts by firing someone in her group. But the best moments occur when Brenda--calm as a cucumber--does what she does best: closes cases. Aside from a couple episodes that allude to past years, this third season (which originally aired in 2007), is easy to follow even for new viewers who haven't seen previous episodes. --Jae-Ha Kim

5 out of 5 stars She's wonderful!   August 18, 2008
If you love the show, add this to your library so you are never without something great to watch!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT   August 15, 2008
This show grows on you and will instantly become one of your favorites. This season is the best by far. The cast is amazing but of course the show is carried by the excellent performance of Kyra Sedgwick. Wow. To see Brenda lee Johnson working over a suspect to get a confession using her skill, creativity and intelligence is television at its best.

This is the glue that holds the show together but this 3rd season also brought us more into Brenda's personal relationship with Fritz and also with her parents. Both are very enjoyable, inventive aspects to add yet even more dimensions to the character that is Brenda Lee Johnson.

The subjects are timely and very interesting. All I can say is I watch this show on the edge of my seat and find it to be of the highest caliber compared to other shows out there.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another stellar season   August 15, 2008
I continue to be impressed by The Closer's range of storylines and emotional appeal: it can be funny, thought-provoking, and poignant all in the same episode, and the character development continues to be at the forefront in the series. Well done!

5 out of 5 stars The Closer season three   August 14, 2008
This is an excellent product if you like the Closer tv show. This is also a good set if you would like to see the Closer for the first time.

3 out of 5 stars HOLD STILL!!   August 14, 2008
Oh, magosh! If I could stand to watch Sedgwick fiddled constantly with her mouth through the first season, I thought I could stand her completely distracting, maniacally ADD movement, purse fumbling, from then on, but, alas, it's very difficult. The camera does not actually stay on her face for any more than fractions of a second, making me about as nervous as she is. Last year she was ALWAYS, "eating peanuts", trying to get the small pieces from between her teeth with her lips and tongue, EVEN when she wasn't eating anything. Holy Cow! The way she gets her confessions is amazing, however, through hard work and pushing her team, so on balance I have to watch, for that reason. "In real life", whatever that is, lawyering-up negates a real-world existence of too many episodes where she gets her man the way she does in the show, you have to know that. She is a likeable character in the show, but you know that normal FBI Agent would never survive around her world of hyperactivity and OCD behavior. It is true, that in most professions, where someone/anyone truly is exceptional, they are almost always so dedicated to the job, the athletic event, the occupation or hobby, in which they excel, that most of what she does is common among overachievers in all walks of life. If you asked the average attorney, however, which show on TV is the most unlikely to really happen, this one would be named number one.
